The program content for Reading Renaissance was developed from years of public speaking experience in diverse venues and audiences in the U.S. and internationally. When students hear the word that an assembly is scheduled about a reading enrichment program and all students are required to attend, many students will bring their phones if they can and prepare to be bored. Maybe a few might think that they will be hearing a presentation from a guy who " lives in a van down by the river!" As a public speaker, entertainer, and comedian one of the key elements in reinforcing ideas and concepts is audience participation. By involving the audience in the presentation, it becomes a shared "virtual" experience. An interactive presentation cannot be scripted. It is dependent on the audience and flow of energy in the room.

The goal of a presentation is involving the audience in a real life experience that illustrates and reinforces how reading helps to develop imagination and personal vision . We can laugh and learn that we all have the same desire for a happy and joyful life. Stories have shaped history for centuries, the right presentation can shape a reader for life.

Robert "Bill" Neyland Bio

Beyond the arts, Bill has served as both a Youth and Children's Pastor and Administator for the Hopeline Crisis Call Center in Garden Valley Texas. As Chaplain at the New Orleans Mission, he worked with the local community to develop a musical ensemble that performed in the city and provided an opportunity for some of the city's most vulnerable residents to creatively express themselves . His ministry and his artistry are deeply intertwined, both rooted in a belief that words have the power to heal, transform, and open doors. He is the author of What a Beautiful Day, a work that reflects his belief that hope, joy, and beauty can be found in everyday life. At the heart of everything Bill does is a simple but powerful conviction: reading matters. He believes that literacy is not just a skill, but a gateway to imagination, empathy, and a better future, and that every person deserves access to the world that opens up when you pick up a book.

Make Them Laugh, Make Them Learn: Why Comedy and Participation Change Everything

Comedy isn't a distraction from learning, it's a delivery system for it. Humor lowers the emotional guard, making new ideas feel less threatening and more memorable. When a concept lands with a laugh, it sticks. Similarly, when young people are given a role to play rather than a seat to fill, engagement follows naturally. Participation signals that their voice matters, and that sense of ownership transforms a passive listener into an active learner. The classroom, the library, the community program, all become places where something is happening with them, not just at them.

At the same time, an honest conversation about reading has to acknowledge the pull of pop culture. Young people today are immersed in a world of short-form video, trending audio, and fast-moving social content, and they're not wrong to love it. Pop culture is vibrant, social, and immediate. The challenge isn't to compete with it, but to connect through it. When reading is framed in the context of stories, characters, and conversations young people already care about, the bridge between scrolling and reading becomes far shorter than most adults assume.

Ultimately, what young people want most is to be seen and heard. They gravitate toward what reflects them, challenges them, and includes them. Reading, when introduced with humor, relevance, and a genuine invitation to participate, stops feeling like an obligation and starts feeling like an option worth choosing. The goal isn't to drag young readers away from the world they love, it's to show them that books have always been a part of it.

Robert Neyland has been doing programs at the St. Tammany Parish Library for every summer for over twelve years. His programs always draw large crowds of families with young children. He knows how to speak to various age groups on a level that they can understand, always captivating their attention.
